Making Statements - John John Florence

http://www.aframephoto.com/surf-photos/John%20John-Florence/40,0,0,1/

While there's no doubt that the majority of the surf world will have their eyes focused on Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater as they enter the last event of the year in a battle for the 2013 ASP Championship, you can't help but also glance sideways to see what one of the world's most dynamic surfers will do in his backyard of Hawaii this winter. ESPN.com gives a sneak peek of what John John Florence is capable of in head high to mountain high surf. Needless to say, it's pretty awe inspiring.

DJ and Damo

When he's not freediving and spearfishing giant fish, you can find DJ Struntz linking up with surfing's top pros. DJ and Damien Hobgood have been friends and travel partners for years, so it's quite appropriate that they landed the latest cover of Surfing Magazine's world travel issue. Well done boys!

Trash Slick Surfing in Indonesia

Zak Noyle's image of Dede Suryana has sent a shockwave around the globe. He knew it was going to be a powerful image when he captured it, but the response has been something Noyle never imagined. The surf world was quick to jump on it as it made its way onto several covers internationally and of course its appearance in Surfer Magazine (Zak's employer) who broke the story upon his return from that eye opening trip to Java.

Zak is quick to point out that this "isn't just an Indonesian problem. It's all of us and wherever you are in the world you need to help spread awareness about the importance of keeping our oceans free of debris.

Noyle hopes "that this image will help inspire people to take responsibility for their local areas and stop the increasing amount of garbage that makes its way into the oceans we all love and respect."

Uragano (Hurricane) Kelly

Felicitazione to Kelly Slater and photographer Todd Glaser for scoring the latest cover of Men's Health in Italy. From what we can gather (through an online translation tool) from the cover blurb, Men's Health is looking into the secret of Slater's perfect physique. We're guessing it's not extra helpings of pasta and pizza.

2nd Annual Sion Milosky Steep and Deep Pipeline Photo Challenge

Nathan Florence and Tony Heff displaying their winning image
Congratulations are in order as Nathan Florence and Tony Heff were the winning combo in the 2nd Annual Sion Milosky Steep and Deep Pipeline Photo Challenge. Nathan elevator dropped into a thick and mean Pipe shack, grabbed rail and muscled his way into a pit that Sion would have been proud of. A-Frame photographer, Tony Heff was swimming in the challenging conditions and nailed the winning shot along with the ensuing barrel. Check out the entire sequence here.

MR and Quiksilver

We're very stoked that Quiksilver is using Dan Merkel's classic shot of Mark Richards aka MR aka The Wounded Gull in it's latest advertising campaign. There's no mistaking MR's style and Merkel captured this straight legged bottom turn at Off the Wall on the North Shore of Oahu in the heyday of the Bustin' Down the Door era.

Flynn is Swell

Flynn Novak has been a fixture on the North Shore for years now. You usually see him parked in a massive Pipe pit or perfecting his Flynnstone Flip at Rocky Point. Recently, A-Frame photographer, Brent Bielmann scored the cover of the Swell catalog with Flynn putting it on rail. By shooting from a unique perspective, Brent managed to differentiate his photos from the rest of the pack shooting on the beach. Well done Brent!

Zak Noyle Atop a White Horse

We're stoked that A-Frame photographer Zak Noyle had his shot of Kalani Chapman standing tall in a rainbow-backed Tahitian shack chosen to grace the cover of the 4th issue of White Horses. If you haven't checked out White Horses, you need to. More megazine than magazine, this beauty deserves space on your coffee table rather than your bathroom.

Steve Pezman in the LA Times

Ahhh...the Sunday newspaper. I can't think of many things more enjoyable than relaxing on a Sunday catching up on the news. It was great to see a legend such as Steve Pezman profiled in the Business section of the Los Angeles Times this last week. In the article Pez chats about creating the Surfer's Journal with his wife Debee and evolution of the publication over the years.

Actually one thing more enjoyable then that Sunday newspaper is when the newest Surfer's Journal arrives in the mail!

ESPN's 50 Most Influential People in Action Sports

ESPN recently named their 50 most influential people in action sports and while we were happy to see some of surfing's usual suspects on the list like Shane Dorian (No. 45), John John Florence (No. 16), Dane Reynolds (No. 14), Stephanie Gilmore (No. 13) and Kelly Slater (No. 1), we were really stoked to see one of A-Frame's original contributors and good friend, David Reddick (No. 42) make the list. Dave's not only a legendary photographer and photo editor for Bike and Powder Magazines, he's one of nicest humans you'll ever meet. Great to see that ESPN recognized Dave's contributions to the action sports world!

David Reddick has been the photo editor at Powder and Bike magazines since 1992 and he's launched many photographers' careers. "No one has had more of an influence on the evolution of ski photography than Reddick," says photographer Grant Gunderson.
